Monday Matinee 10/28/13
Hello everyone and Happy Monday!
I hope you all made it out to see some terrific theater this weekend. I had other things going on and did not find myself watching any live shows but I am so incredibly excited about “Singing in the Rain” this weekend at UC-CCM.
Max Clayton has a very difficult task of taking on the role made famous the one and only Gene Kelly … but if anyone can handle it, I think he can. I’ve seen Max dance his butt off and act his face off and I have heard how hard he’s been working on this role. Plus, I’ve been told that he’s possibly one of the nicest and most humble people alive. I know that the cast has been rehearsing like crazy and and tech people are excited about what they’re able to do in the theater with the rain and other effects. It is almost sold out so if you haven’t gotten tickets yet, do it now. I’ll be there both Friday night and Sunday afternoon.
Opening tomorrow night at the Aronoff is the Broadway Across America Series production of Flashdance The Musical. For many folks in town, this is as close to Broadway as they’ll ever get and the Aronoff is a very nice venue. Personally, I’d rather see a show where I can sit a whole lot closer to the stage for a fraction of the cost but if you like classic 80’s music and can’t wait for Kings Island’s 80’s show next summer, this might be a good ticket for you.
From everything I’ve heard Oklahoma! at Wright State is a rousing success, as well. Also in Dayton, this week will see the opening of Fiddler on the Roof at the Human Race Theatre. The run has been extended until the end of November due to popularity. This crowd pleaser will be extra-crowd pleasing on December 1st when they offer a one time only Sing-a-Long concert performance.
Cabaret is getting rave reviews at the Playhouse in the Park. If you’re looking for spookier shows, both The Rocky Horror Puppet Show in Daytonand Slasher at the Falcon Theater in Newport are still running through this weekend. Also, there’s Dracula at the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts running for two more weeks.
Also opening this weekend is Bull at the Know Theater. This is a companion piece to the critically acclaimed play, Cock, also produced by the Know. The Know Theatre is the home of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival and as part of their Fringe Encore series, Petunia and Chicken will be back to perform on 11/10 and 11/11. I’ve heard from several folks that this show is not to be missed.
Looking forward, The Wild Party starring Paige Dobkins and Mark Beyer opens on 11/15 at Wright State. Tickets will go on sale on Monday 11/11; this edgy, new adult musical should be fantastic and should not be missed. Seating is limited in the versatile Herbst Theater so don’t wait to get your tickets.
Also, Untethered Theater will present a dark Thanksgiving comedy, The House of Yes, also opening 11/15. From their web site, here is a description of this play:
“The House of Yes is a dark comedy that pries into the lives of the dysfunctional Pascal family. Time seems to have come to a screeching halt for this family with the Kennedy assassination. The story picks up as a Thanksgiving hurricane swirls outside. Jackie-O, beyond obsessed with her namesake, anticipates the homecoming of her brother Marty. But when arrives with his new fiancé, mayhem ensues.”
So many great shows to see around town. Make sure you get out and check out as many of them as you can! Hope to see you at the theatre!
